In recent study by Dr. Santos and colleagues, title: Erectile dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome-Prevalence and determinants, and published in the medical journal Rev Port Pneumol. 2012. Their study indicated the strong evidence and closely relationship between Erectile dysfunction and obstructive sleep apnea. They determined a prevalence of Erectile dysfunction among 62 men with newly diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. Using the 5-item version of the International Index Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire, the authors identified ED in 64.4% of the individuals.

Most recent research studies corroborate the profound hormonal deficit as a result of OSA and what it is more amazing, perhaps, in this physiological findings, is the fact that during the deep phase of sleep (N3), is precisely where the most important hormones like growth hormone, Testosterone and Gonadotropin hormones (brain hormones which stimulate the testicles and ovaries to produce sex hormones) are secreted. These hormones, in part, are the ones maintaining the sexual dynamics and integrity of an individual and if the levels drop because of OSA, then Sexual dysfunction emerges and causes the detrimental and psychosocial pressure and frustration associated with it. At the same time it explains the cause and effect correlation between snoring with sleep apnea and the various sexual dysfunctions including Erectile dysfuction or Impotence

In a very elegant and interesting study, researchers at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York evaluated 870 consecutively enrolled men through a cardiac screening program. Patients were screened for Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Erectile Dysfunction through clinical questionnaires and were asked about their history of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. Sixty-three percent of patients in the study screened positive for obstructive sleep apnea, 5.6 percent had a history of diabetes, and 29 percent had a smoking history. The likelihood for having Obstructive sleep Apnea (OSA) increased as the severity of Erectile Dysfunction (ED)increased.

As reported in a recent study By Dr Volkow, of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Bethesda, Maryland. Their study demonstrated how dopamine and dopamine receptors decreased in individuals with poor night’s sleep. Researchers have shown that lack of sleep down regulates, or “numbs” if you will, brain dopamine receptors. This means that these receptors are less responsive to external stimuli, such as those in the bedroom. Why would your brain play such a nasty trick on you?  Because the brain needs repair and boost the levels of sex hormones and neurotransmitters.

Of all the five stages of sleep, Stage 3 is the most influential and determinant in a healthy and adequate sexual quality of life. Stage N3 is called “slow wave sleep” (SWS) and is characterized by the presence of slow brain waves called “delta waves” interspersed with smaller, faster waves. Blood pressure falls, breathing slows, and temperatures drops even lower, with the body becoming immobile. Sleep is deeper, with no eye movement and decreased muscle activity, although muscles retain their ability to function. It is most difficult to be awakened during. It is in this Stage where the brain secrets and rebuilds itself of the most important Sex hormones and neurotransmitters like growth hormone, Testosterone, Dopamine and Gonadotropin hormones (brain hormones which stimulate the testicles and ovaries to produce sex hormones). Unfortunately, it has been shown that this this stage is decreased or absent in individuals with snoring and associated sleep apnea and explains how sleep problems lead to sexual problems. Basically, is not surprising that you are not going to enjoy or be stimulated or satisfied by anything until you put in that required pillow time.

The latest medical literature continues to give more insight on this link, like the study from the University of California, which acknowledges the links between sleep disorders and sexual impotency.  Specifically, the study examined the relationship between Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Erectile Dysfunction.  OSA afflicts more than 24 million Americans and is characterized by repeated stops and starts of breathing during sleep when throat muscles relax and block the airway.  Left untreated, those with sleep apnea suffer from poor quality sleep and chronic sleep deprivation, leading to health issues that can be life-threatening: weight gain, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and sexual dysfunction.

The study found that:

  • Men with erectile dysfunction were more than twice as likely to have OSA than those without erectile dysfunction.
  • The more severe the erectile dysfunction, the greater the likelihood of having OSA
  • Men with erectile dysfunction should probably be screened for OSA

Defining Sleep Apnea

Among the most common sleep disorders are insomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA causes people to stop breathing intermittently throughout the night. Obstructive sleep apnea affects an estimated 24% of men and 9% of women; about 10% of adults have chronic insomnia

In patients with obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissues in the upper airway relax during sleep and block the flow of air. Respiratory effort continues during the event.

  • An apnea is a complete occlusion of the airway and subsequent cessation of airflow for at least ten seconds.
  • Patients who suffer from apneas also tend to exhibit hypopneas, a partial occlusion of the airway that results in a 25-50% reduction in airflow.

In summary, numerous studies support the notion of the strong link between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Sexual dysfunction. The good news for patients with both OSA and ED is that treatment for sleep apnea through continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP), oral appliances, together with drug therapy, has been shown to improve symptoms of ED. A small study finds that treating the sleep disorder with a mechanical device can jump-start a guy’s sex life. Erectile dysfunction resolved in 17 of 42 men who used machines that maintain air flow throughout the night. And even those without sexual dysfunction who used the CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) devices reported a boost in sexual performance, the study found. The study “has a huge implication,” said Dr. Steven Park, of Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. “If you snore or you’re tired and you’re having intimacy issues, consider getting tested for obstructive sleep apnea,” he said. Sleep apnea treatments have revitalized his male patients, Park noted. “In my practice, one of the most common comments is that they’re having erections again upon wakening in the morning,” he said.”Bed partners report improved relations,” Park added.


Erectile dysfunction is common among men with sleep apnea, said Park, author of the book Sleep, Interrupted: A physician reveals the #1 reason why so many of us are sick and tired.

In the new study, researchers at the Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., followed 92 men, average age 46, who began using CPAP machines after being diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. While sleeping, patients wear masks connected to machines that send pressurized air into the throat to keep the airway open throughout the night. The average participant was overweight. Forty-six percent reported erectile dysfunction, and 27 percent said they had diminished libido. After six months, the researchers found that sexual function and satisfaction improved in the CPAP device users, and erectile dysfunction vanished in 41 percent of those who’d had erection issues.
Joyce Walsleben, a sleep medicine specialist and associate professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, said the devices probably boost energy by improving sleep. “It may well have to do with increased oxygen and the production of hormones and other neurotransmitters being reset,” Walsleben said.
As for whether wearing a mask-and-hose getup ruins the mood in bed, Walsleben had this to say: “I can tell you that from people I know with the device, happy bed partners are much more interested in sex — before or after sleep — than those who are fighting over snoring or sleeping in separate rooms.”
